Dear colleagues,
I am inviting expressions of interest from strong prospective PhD candidates interested in event-based vision, neuromorphic computing, and robotic perception at Aston University, Birmingham, UK.
The PhD research would explore low-latency and energy-efficient visual perception for intelligent robotic systems, with potential directions including:
Event cameras and neuromorphic vision
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) and neuromorphic computing
Event-based learning and neural processing
Event-based object detection and tracking
Robotic perception and visual servoing
Event-frame and multimodal sensor fusion
Learning-based perception for robotics
Real-time perception and closed-loop control
Applications in autonomous, biomedical, and small-scale robotic systems
I would particularly welcome candidates with a strong background in robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, machine learning, neuromorphic computing, electrical/electronic engineering, computer science, mechatronics, automation, or related areas.
Applicants with previous research experience, strong programming skills, publications, or hands-on experience with robotics, computer vision, event cameras, SNNs, or neuromorphic systems are particularly encouraged to get in touch.
Please note that this is not currently an advertised funded PhD position. Expressions of interest are particularly welcomed from candidates who already hold external funding/sponsorship, are self-funded, or are eligible for a specific external scholarship or government sponsorship scheme that could support doctoral study at Aston University.
Candidates seeking external scholarships are also welcome to contact me where a specific and realistic funding scheme has already been identified, so that we can discuss research fit and the feasibility of developing an application.
If you are interested, please email me directly at f.sadak(a)aston.ac.uk with:
Academic CV
Publication list, if applicable
A short description of your research interests and relevant experience
Name of your confirmed or intended funding/scholarship scheme, including the expected application deadline
Informal enquiries from suitably funded or scholarship-eligible candidates are very welcome.
